Khlose Enkhounters

A washout resulting from the flooding in 2007 and earlier damage in 2003 resulted in the road’s closure around mile 12 from the turnoff on SR 530. For us, this meant adding sixteen miles to the round trip to Green Mountain, but our concern was not so much with that as the fact that double the average annul snowpack might keep us from our destination. This relatively short trip was to be a photo safari, taking advantage of the perfect weather to capture the spectacular views from the southern flank of the volcano. We had eliminated some more ambitious plans based on the trip reports posted on the Washington Trails Association website. Although emergency funds were approved to rebuild the road this year, that has yet to take place because of a lawsuit filed by Bill Lider of Lynnwood, a member of the Pilchuck Audobon Society, and the Western Environmental Law Center. At least we rode part way. We had reason to be concerned about the snow.
