Boxing champion Orlando Montalvo trains Stamford athletes
STAMFORD -- As temperatures hovered around 90 degrees, stepping into Montalvo's Boxing Gym last Monday afternoon was akin to stepping into a sauna. Montalvo and his wife Sandra Montalvo came to Stamford in 1980 and set out training kids. Montalvo was an amateur and professional boxer in Puerto Rico, where he and Sandra are from, and traveled around the world competing. In 1976, he ran with the Olympic torch for the Pan Americans and won the bronze medal in boxing for Puerto Rico. "The heat is good for training," Orlando Montalvo , owner of the gym, said. Sandra said she remembers stringing up punching bags from trees and driving around the neighborhood picking up kids in their car.
